Schwarz Digits appoints new head of defence

Schwarz Digits, the IT and digital division of the Schwarz Group, said it has appointed Harald Mannheim as head of defence. The number of FTTP connections across mainland France and the overseas territories reached 27.68 million at end-March, or nearly 84 percent of the fixed broadband installed base, according to telecom regulator Arcep. This represents a net increase of nearly 600,000 since end-December, down from approximately 740,000 both in the previous quarter and in the year-earlier period. OVHcloud has announced exclusive talks to acquire Gladia, a French start-up founded in 2022 that specialises in AI-enabled speech-to-text transcription and similar audio applications. Gladia's capabilities, managed through a single API, enable clients to transcribe conversations in real time and in batch across more than 100 languages. The company serves around 2,000 enterprise customers, while also supporting more than 300,000 developers.

Snom, the German manufacturer of VoIP/fixed telephony and conferencing devices, has introduced the new D895M model as part of its D8xx series. Orange, a founding partner of the VivaTech exhibition, has presented its programme of activities for this year's edition of the event, which will be held in Paris from 17 to 20 June. GlobalConnect has sold its B2C business in Germany to NordConnect. NordConnect, a company established last year by the utility company in Neumünster and Stadtwerke SH, will operate the Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) network for residential customers in the Hamburg and Kiel regions. French SIMs in 2G-only devices fall to 2 mln at end-March

France closed March with 2 million SIMs active in 2G-only devices, down from 2.4 million at the end of 2025, according to telecom authority Arcep. The finding is part of the regulator's quarterly update on the migration away from the early generations of mobile networks. SIMs in 2G-only devices accounted for 1.5 percent of the total active base supporting voice, messaging and data services, while representing 3 percent of the M2M installed base.

Sosh, the no-frills brand of Orange France, has raised the monthly rate of its 'Boost' fibre package, after launching this offer at the end of April for EUR 26.99. The price for new sign-ups has now increased by EUR 1 to EUR 27.99 per month. German industry associations are urging a review of the draft bill to reform the telecommunication law (TKG) approved by the government. The bill includes measures to accelerate the expansion of mobile and fibre-optic networks. Industry group VATM is demanding improvements to several key parts of the draft bill. The Velodrome football stadium in the French city of Marseille, which was renamed Orange Velodrome in 2016 under a 10-year branding agreement, is looking for a new sponsor after Orange decided not to renew the partnership. German operators commit EUR 8.5 bln to expanding FTTB/H networks in 2026

German network operators including Telekom Deutschland, Vodafone, Telefonica Germany, 1&1, Deutsche Glasfaser and EWE Tel have pledged to invest EUR 8.5 billion this year, on top of more investments in 2027 and 2028, to expand FTTB/H networks. The commitments are set out in a memorandum of understanding with the government, federal states, municipal organisations and industry associations to accelerate the expansion of public fixed-line and mobile networks in the country.

Telefonica Germany teams up with OQ Technology to test D2D satellite connectivity

Telefonica Germany said it is teaming up with  satellite operator OQ Technology to demonstrate sovereign European D2D satellite connectivity from low earth orbit (LEO) directly to smartphones. The test will take place over the course of this year in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania  in Germany, using Telefonica's frequency spectrum. The companies will test OQ's LEO satellites operated at an altitude of around 500 km to 600 km, to cover unserved areas in a more targeted manner.
