Ukrainian operator Lifecell has announced that its 5G roaming services are now available in 67 countries globally. The operator began offering 5G roaming in 2023. Its VoLTE roaming services are accessible in 41 countries.

A pre-6G pilot backed by the EU's Smart Network Services Joint Undertaking (SNS-JU) is progressing a trial deployment of extended reality in action in two rural schools in Romania. A recent update of SNS-JU activity said that the trial was implemented in May. Existing 5G capacity from Orange Romania was deployed to carry XR content, but the programme also provided a glimpse at technologies likely to become more prevalent in 6G cellular, such as advanced dynamic slicing and quality-of-service (QoS).

Telecom Italia (TIM) has launched a new episode of its advertising campaign located in a military fort to promote its FWA (Fixed Wireless Access) offer with a 5G antenna ahead of the summer season. The corresponding ad appearing on all main TV and social media channels features actor Massimo Lopez and singer Gigi D'Alessio engaged in a long-distance conversation between the fort and a picturesque seaside location.

Private mobile networks top 2,000, with manufacturing leading the way - research

Private mobile networks with an estimated contract value of at least EUR 100,000 were in operation at 2,003 organisations at the end of March, according to the GSA's latest Private Mobile Networks report. Private cellular deployments were tracked in 88 countries. Manufacturing remains the biggest sector in terms of quantities, followed by education, academic research, and mining. The GSA reports that private 5G adoption has accelerated, accounting for over 50 percent of deployments disclosed since 2022.

Brazil and the European Union have formalised a Digital Partnership to establish international cooperation in critical areas such as data governance, AI, 5G and 6G network infrastructure development, high-capacity connectivity, and digital public goods and services platforms. Beyond bilateral initiatives, the partnership will also involve political coordination in major global forums like the UN, G20, ITU, Unesco and ICANN, as well as technical standardisation bodies such as ISO, IEEE and 3GPP.

Tanzanian telephone subscriptions rise by nearly 5% in Q1

Tanzania's telecom subscriptions increased by 4.6 percent to 111.91 million in the first quarter ended March 2026 from 106.9 million in December 2025, bringing the telecom penetration rate to a record 159.8 percent, according to the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA). Mobile subscriptions accounted for 99.9 percent (111.79 million) of the total, while fixed subscriptions made up the remaining 0.1 percent (111,933).

Excelerate Technology, UK-based global communications/connectivity solutions provider, has won a contract from Clare County Fire and Rescue Service in Ireland to upgrade its Incident Command Unit (ICU) into a modern mobile command platform. The total number of FTTP subscriber lines in Ireland reached 1.09 million in Q1 2026, to account for 62 percent of all fixed broadband subscriber lines, according to the latest quarterly communications market data from regulator ComReg. London Tube on track for network-wide mobile coverage by end-2026

Transport for London (TfL) said the entire Tube network was on track to have mobile coverage by end-2026, with around 60 percent of underground Tube stations now having mobile coverage. Mobile 4G/5G coverage is now live on more parts of the Circle, Metropolitan and Bakerloo lines, including tunnels between stations. TfL is working with Boldyn Networks on the project.

3GPP confirms Release 21 freeze deadlines

3GPP has confirmed working deadlines for its upcoming Release 21 criteria, expected to mark the inaugural publication of normative 6G standards. Release 21 is scheduled for a third-phase functional phase in December 2028, ahead of the final ASN.1/OpenAPI freeze in March 2029.
