Vodafone research examines growing trend of deliberate internet restrictions

New Vodafone research has illustrated the growing frequency of arranged takedowns of internet services. Citing prior findings from the human rights non-profit organisation Access Now and its #KeepItOn coalition, the paper notes that 2025 was the worst year on record, with at least 313 blackouts in 52 countries. This surpassed a previous record of 304 shutdowns in 2024, demonstrating that the use of shutdowns as a governance and security measure is still on the rise.
