Carphone Warehouse, Dixons start merger talks
UK retailers Dixons and Carphone Warehouse confirmed they are in talks for a possible merger. The companies issued a statement noting recent speculation about such a merger, but said the talks are still at a very preliminary stage and no agreement is certain. They did not provide further details on the possible deal. Carphone Warehouse and Dixons Retail respectively own more than 900 and 2,000 stores in Europe. Carphone operates as Phone House outside the UK and also owns 46 percent of Virgin Mobile France.

Carphone Warehouse and Dixons Retail are close to agreeing a GBP 4 billion merger to create a UK retailer with 1,300 stores, reports The Telegraph. Carphone Warehouse reported like-for-like sales up 2.3 percent in its fiscal fourth quarter to March, as demand for higher-priced LTE packages helped offset continued weakness in the prepaid market. Carphone seeking to sell Virgin Mobile France stake - report

Private equity company BC Partners, which owns UK mobile phone retailer Phones 4u, is understood to have approached Dixons about a possible partnership, reports Sky News. UK retailers Carphone Warehouse and Dixons have asked the Takeover Panel to extend the current deadline for their merger negotiations. They announced the talks in February and were given a deadline of 17.00 hours on Monday 24 March to confirm whether they planned to press ahead with a deal. Carphone Warehouse reported revenues for the last quarter of 2013 down 6.9 percent year-on-year to GBP 922 million, hurt by fewer stores, negative currency effects and a slower postpaid market. UK retailer Phones 4U plans to open up to 100 new stores next year. The retailer has added around 123 new stores in the past 18 months, around 100 of which opened in 2012 alone. Carphone Warehouse to expand in Harvey Norman stores

Carphone Warehouse has announced plans to expand its shop-in-shops in the Harvey Norman retail chain in Ireland. The mobile retailer has been testing the concept in a shop in north county Dublin since last year. Following its success, a further 11 Carphone Warehouse outlets will open in Harvey Norman stores across the country, the Irish Independent reports.
