Deutsche Telekom, SK Telecom unveil cross-investment agreement

Deutsche Telekom and SK Telecom have announced a cross-investment agreement to help boost their 5G competitiveness in the global market. This expands their strategic technology and business partnership unveiled at Mobile World Congress (MWC) in 2016. 

The new agreement will see SKT invest invest in California-based MobiledgeX, an edge computing company founded by Deutsche Telekom. In return, Deutsche Telekom will invest the same amount in Switzerland-based ID Quantique (IDQ), SKT's quantum cryptography communications partner. 

Deutsche Telekom and SKT aim to gain global leadership in the 5G mobile market by offering specialised 5G services with ultra-low latency in areas such as virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and telemedicine.

SK Telecom-powered ID Quantique wins EU quantum communication infra project

South Korean mobile operator SK Telecom has announced that ID Quantique has been awarded a project funded by the European Union and launches a new range of quantum random number generators. SK Telecom has invested in Switzerland-based ID Quantique, a quantum cryptography communication company, in February 2018 and integrated its Quantum Tech Lab with ID Quantique. Deutsche Telekom said it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with SK Telecom to continue the partnership in LTE and 5G networks, OTT media, security and cloud industry. SK Telecom provides quantum cryptography system for Deutsche Telekom's test network

South Korean operator SK Telecom has applied a quantum cryptography system to Deutsche Telekom's test network, Yonhap news agency reports. The system was deployed at Deutsche Telekom's test network in Berlin. The system includes quantum key distribution and an ultra-compact quantum random number generator, SK Telecom said. SK Telecom and Deutsche Telekom plan to apply SK Telecom's quantum cryptography in the German company's long-distance telecommunication and commercial network by 2019.

Deutsche Telekom has set up a new edge computing business and appointed former Ericsson cloud technology executive Jason Hoffmann as its CEO, according to Light Reading.
