KPN starts LTE tests in Amsterdam

Dutch operator KPN has started testing its new 4G network in the Amsterdam area. Spectrum in the 800MHz band has been deployed in a number of areas for the tests, which are aimed at optimising the frequency use ahead of a commercial launch in February 2013. 

KPN acquired the 800MHz frequencies in the recently completed auction and said they will help it roll out LTE services quickly. After a launch in the north of the Randstad in February, KPN plans to cover around half the Dutch population by mid-2013. The 4G service should be available nationwide next summer.

KPN's 4G strategy to build on existing services

KPN has announced the launch of 4G in the Netherlands, and at the same time, the Dutch operator is addressing its existing network. The operator wants to be ready for the future when mobile data use is even more commonplace than today. KPN plans to launch 4G services in Amsterdam and north Holland in early February and will take the services nationwide by mid-2014, the carrier said during a press conference. Agentschap Telecom extends licenses after multiband auction

Dutch spectrum regulator Agentschap Telecom has extended 41 licenses for the use of frequencies for the provision of public electronic communication services, according to the government gazette Staatscourant, which said that the decision was taken on 2 January. Dutch telecoms look to 4G, with KPN leading the pack

Dutch operators will herald in 2013 with 4G, with KPN the first to introduce new subscriptions. The operator plans to announce speeds and rates in mid-January, as well as information covering which smartphones, tablets, laptops and dongles are most appropriate for 4G. Dutch mobile auction leads to fourth MNO, quick LTE roll-out

In this Research Brief we provide an overview of the results of the Dutch multiband spectrum auction which ended on Friday 14 December 2012. This includes reactions from the winners and losers on their LTE roll-out plans and Telecompaper's expectations about post-auction developments. KPN to deply 4G nationwide in 2014

KPN is planning to complete the deployment of 4G across the Netherlands in the course of 2014, KPN director Joost Farwerck said in a video. Dutch spectrum auction: no real surprises, but how aggressive will Tele2 be?

The Dutch spectrum auction ended on 14 December with total proceeds of EUR 3.80 billion for frequencies in the 800, 900, 1800, 2100 and 2600 MHz bands. KPN plans to launch in February already its first LTE offers, followed by Vodafone in the summer of 2013. Tele2 will likely be last on the market, as it must build its network from scratch. KPN said it will not pay a final dividend over 2012 and that it will adjust the 2013 dividend to EUR 0.03 per share, after investing in the Dutch multiband auction.
