KPN sues Acer, Xiaomi, U-blox, Coolpad for alleged patent infringement

Dutch operator KPN has started six lawsuits in a court in Delaware for alleged patent infringement with smartphones and other wireless devices. The lawsuits accuse Xiaomi, Coolpad, BLU Products, Bullitt Group, Acer and U-blox of infringing at least two KPN patents. KPN is seeking financial compensation and a court order ending the infringement, De Telegraaf reports. 

KPN asserted the same patents in a suit against Samsung in 2014-15. Samsung ended up settling and agreeing a licence with KPN. 

KPN said it tried to agree licences with the other companies but was unsuccessful.

Dutch operator KPN has been awarded USD 31.5 million by a jury in Texas in its patent infringement suit brought against Ericsson, Bloomberg reports. Ericsson was found to infringe three patents held by KPN for mobile technology.

KPN files lawsuit against Ford over LTE patents

KPN has filed a patent lawsuit in Munich against the German subsidiary of Ford Motor Company, Ford-Werke GmbH. The case concerns patent EP2291033, which covers a "telecommunications network and method for time-based network access." The patent has been declared essential to the LTE standard. Cases regarding this particular patent family have been filed against several defendants over the past decade.

U‑blox announced a settlement with Dutch telecom operator KPN to end their patent litigation. U-blox agreed to take a worldwide, non-exclusive licence for KPN's patented technologies, for a defined term. Further financial details of the deal were not disclosed.

KPN, Mitsubishi Electric join 3G Licensing group

3G Licensing SA, a subsidiary of the Sisvel Group, announced that Dutch operator KPN and Mitsubishi Electric have joined its 3G Joint Licensing Agreement. This programme aggregates a range of 3G patents in a single licence. To date, only patents owned by 3G Licensing were included in the programme, and this sees the licence open up to third parties as well. It includes 3G patents deemed essential to UMTS, as well as the WCDMA, ARIB STD-T63, TD-SCDMA, FOMA, HSPA, HSPA+, HSUPA and HSDPA standards.

KPN takes Samsung to court over patent rights

KPN has taken Samsung to court over patent right, Bloomberg reported, citing court documents. The case is before a court in Marshall, Texas. The case centres around data transmission technology which was apparently used in the Galaxy S4 and S5. Two years of license negotiations have still not resulted in an agreement. Nu.nl said that KPN decline to provide any comment on the matter.
