Netherlands to award 700 MHz licences for North Sea

The Dutch spectrum agency announced it will offer three licences for the 700 MHz band in the Dutch part of the North Sea. Interested parties can apply to the Telecom Agency for the permits, and if demand exceeds supply, an auction will be held. 

Permits for the 700 MHz band were awarded earlier this summer to KPN, T-Mobile and VodafoneZiggo following an auction, but these are valid only on the mainland and a small part of the sea, in territorial waters. The operators already provide some services at sea, sometimes in partnership with specialists like Tampnet.  

The regulator will take a decision within 15 weeks on awarding the maritime licences.

Dutch govt to auction North Sea permits for 700 MHz band on 15 April

Dutch spectrum regulator Agentschap Telecom will auction the licenses for the 700 MHz band in the North Sea on 15 April. An auction will take place because demand is greater than the supply. Candidates were able to submit applications until 12 January. The three permits are intended for mobile networks at sea, including at wind farms, and will be valid until 2040.

The Telecom Agency of the Netherlands announced plans to award three permits for using the 700 MHz band in the North Sea. Each permit will allow 2x10 MHz at fixed sites in the Dutch part of the sea. Interested parties can apply until 12 January 2021 for the permits.

Agentschap Telecom kan vanaf 2 oktober drie vergunningen in de 700 MHz-frequentieband uitgeven voor mobiele communicatie op het Nederlandse deel van de Noordzee. Dat gebeurt via een 'verdeling op afroep'. Geïnteresseerde bedrijven kunnen vanaf 2 oktober een aanvraag indienen. Zijn er meerdere kandidaten, dan wordt er geveild.

Dutch 5G spectrum auction raises EUR 1.23 billion

The Dutch mobile spectrum auction, started 29 June, has finished with total proceeds of EUR 1.23 billion. The three mobile operators KPN, VodafoneZiggo and T-Mobile Netherlands all acquired frequencies for respectively EUR 416 million, EUR 416 million and EUR 400 million.

Tampnet to extend KPN network into North Sea

KPN and Tampnet have entered into a partnership to expand 4G coverage in the North Sea for business customers. An offshore antenna network built by Tampnet will extend the coverage of KPN's network by more than 5,000 km2. The collaboration was announced at the Maritime Offshore & Sustainable Technology symposium (MOST) at The Hague University.

T-Mobile Netherlands to improve coverage in North Sea, also for 5G

T-Mobile NL said the initiative represents an important development for pleasure craft and fishing, but also for other commercial vessels. Examples include commercial ships, rescue and coast guard boats and maintenance staff for North Sea wind farms and other offshore installations. There have been mobile sites at sea for years, once realized by the PTT (Post, Telegraph and Telephony company), but mobile coverage is becoming important for new applications.
