Samsung pre-installs Spotify on all mobile devices

Samsung started pre-installing Spotify on all of its mobile devices from 8 March. The move comes after Samsung integrated the music streaming service with its Bixby artificial intelligence (AI) platform and after it named Spotify its go-to music service provider this past summer. 

New Spotify customers in the US with certain Samsung Galaxy mobile devices, including the recently launched S10, may be eligible for six months of free Spotify Premium, redeemable in-app.

Spotify to expand in podcasts as growth expected to slow in 2019

Spotify reported strong results for the fourth quarter, at the high end of its outlook thanks to a strong holiday sales campaign. As flagged in its previous quarterly report, the company expects some pressure on margins in 2019, as it launches a new strategy to grow revenue through offering podcasts and other audio content besides music. The group confirmed the acquisitions of Gimlet Media and Anchor to drive the podcast business and said more takeovers are planned this year.

Spotify strikes global distribution deal with India's T-Series

Music streaming service Spotify has signed a global content deal with Indian music and film company T-Series. The deal will see Spotify's worldwide audience gain access to T-Series' entire Indian song catalogue including Bollywood and regional movie soundtracks, as well as a wealth of non-film albums and emerging artist content. With over 160,000 songs, the T-Series catalogue includes the most popular Indian songs recorded over the past 30 years and will now be available to all Spotify users.

Spotify reached 200 million customers worldwide in December, Music Business Worldwide reported, citing statements made by communications chief Dustee Jenkins at CES 2019. The figures are for monthly active users, or MAUs, and include both ad-funded users and premium subscribers.

Spotify stops accepting new subscriptions over Apple platform

Spotify has stopped accepting new subscribers over Apple's iTunes, following a similar move by Netflix. Customers can still download the iOS app for Spotify on the App Store, but are redirected to the Spotify website if they want to sign up and pay for a Premium subscription. The moves means Spotify avoids having to share revenue on the subscription with Apple for using its billing platform. Existing customers can continue using the Apple billing method.

Samsung has presented in New York the new Galaxy Note 9 smartphone, the latest in its premium phablet series.
