Samsung S8 to launch without Bixby voice commands

Samsung's Galaxy S8 flagship smartphone will ship initially without one of its key new features - the voice-controlled assistant Bixby. The software will be installed on the phone and some features will be available, but voice control for Bixby will not be available when the S8 launches in the US 21 April. Owners of the S8 will have to wait for a software update to be released later this spring, the company told The Verge. 

Bixby is available from a dedicated button on the S8. In addition to taking voice commands to open and run apps on the phones, Bixby offers augmented reality camera features (Bixby Vision), a Home panel of shortcuts developed through learning the user's habits and reminders integrated with apps.

Samsung prepares smart speaker with Bixby - report

Samsung is working on its own smart speaker, powered by the Bixby digital assistant, the Wall Street Journal reports. People familiar with the matter said the expected launch of the device is not yet known, as Samsung is still working on preparing Bixby for languages other than Korean and other specifications of the speaker are yet to be decided. The project, internally code-named 'Vega', has been underway for more than a year, the report said.

Samsung calls for early Bixby testers in the US

Samsung announced that start of testing of its Bixby digital assistant with a small group of Galaxy S8 owners in the US. The launch of the voice-activated software was delayed when the S8 went on sale earlier this year, and to date Samsung has only made Bixby available in its home market Korea. In a statement the company said Galaxy S8 or S8+ owners can sign up now to participate in the early preview test, which will start "in the near future". The software update will roll out later for all S8 users.

Samsung to launch full-fledged service of Bixby AI platform

Samsung Electronics plans to start the full-fledged service of its Bixby artificial intelligence (AI) program installed on Galaxy S8 smartphones, Yonhap news agency reports. Samsung net profit up 46% in Q1, mobile results lower

Samsung reported a drop in mobile revenues and profit in the first quarter but said shipments improved compared to the previous quarter thanks to new mid-range models like the A7. Samsung sees 720,000 Galaxy S8 preorders in Korea in 7 days

Samsung Electronics reports it has received 720,000 preorders for its Galaxy S8 smartphone in South Korea in the first 7 days since the device was launched on the local market, Yonhap news agency reports, citing Koh Dong-jin, president of Samsung's mobile communications business. "Initial market response [for the Galaxy S8] is better than expected", the company representative said. Samsung launched local preorders on 7 April. The official release is scheduled for 21 April.
