SK Telecom, Nokia Networks open 5G R&D centre
South Korean mobile operator SK Telecom and Nokia Networks have opened a 5G research and development centre at Nokia Networks' Korean office. The centre will serve as a venue where researchers from the two companies will study and develop core 5G technologies, including gigabit-level data transmission technology and cloud-based virtualized base stations. Around year-end, SK Telecom and Nokia Networks also plan to open a test bed to verify and demonstrate 5G technologies. SK Telecom and Nokia Networks plan to launch a 5G pilot service demonstration in 2018.

SK Telecom, Intel partner on 5G technologies

South Korean mobile operator SK Telecom has extended its partnership agreement with Intel. Under the terms of the extended deal, SK and Intel will jointly develop and verify 5G technologies, Korea IT Times reports. Irish researchers lead new EU 5G networks project

The Waterford Institute of Technology's TSSG research group has won a EUR 6 million EU public-private partnership (PPP) to help build 5G networks of the future, Silicon Republic reports. TSSG will co-ordinate the 30-month Cognitive Networks (CogNet) project as part of the Horizon 2020 programme. CogNet project partners include Telefonica in Spain, Germany's Fraunhofer Fokus Institute, Alcatel-Lucent and WeFi in Israel, and universities in Italy, Berlin and Madrid.

South Korean mobile operator SK Telecom, in partnership with Nokia Networks, have successfully verified the performance of the co-developed 'user plane and control plane separation technique', one of the key enabling technologies for hybrid core network architecture for 5G. South Korean mobile operator SK Telecom, in partnership with Ericsson, has demonstrated a 5G small cell system that offers higher data rates than LTE by suppressing inter-cell interference based on a new 5G radio frame architecture. The demo was carried out in an area heavily affected by inter-cell interference from multiple neighboring small cells. SK Telecom, Kumu Networks to demo pre-5G technology

South Korean mobile operator SK Telecom, in partnership with wireless transmission and signal processing technology provider Kumu Networks, will demonstrate a robot traffic officer using In Band Full Duplex (IBFD) technology at the World IT Show 2015 (WIS) in Seoul, from 27 to 30 May. IBFD is a pre-5G technology that enables simultaneous in-band uplink and downlink communication by cancelling signal interference in real time, to enhance spectral efficiency.

SK Telecom launches Smart Band smart LED bracelet

Korean operator SK Telecom has launched a new Lifeware product dubbed 'Smart Band'. The smart LED bracelet is 7.6mm thick and weighs 20.5g, and comes in four different colors, including white, black, blue and burgundy. The device is made to fit any wrist size. Customers can acquire the Smart Band for around USD 79. The Smart Band will initially be on sale in Korea, and plans are underway to export the product overseas.
