Smart devices attract mainly 20-29 age group - Telecompaper

The adoption rate of connected devices such as for smart homes, for example, is still small in the Netherlands, according to a study by Telecompaper covering May and June. Only a small group of early adopters currently own a connected device such as a smart thermostat. Those aged 20-29 are among among the early adopters. Looking forward, the proportion of Dutch people thinking of buying connected devices over the coming twelve months will be higher than the number of people currently owning such a device. The developments surrounding smart home and connected devices got a boost last year, pushed by a large number of product launches by major players such as Samsung, Google and Apple.

Telecompaper therefore asked almost 900 Dutch people on its Consumer Panel if they intended to buy one of seven examples of connected devices or if they already had these in their possession.

Of all connected devices, the adoption of smart thermostats such as Tone and Nest seem to be the most popular among Dutch consumers. Around 4 percent of respondents already have such a device, while another 12 percent indicate they will buy on within the year. It is easier today to buy a smart thermostat. Eneco said in July that it would also sell its Toon smart thermostat (Toon) to non-Eneco customers. KPN has recently also launched connected home services SmartLife Safety.

3% of Dutch people have smart security.

Around 3 percent of respondents say they have a security camera connected to their smartphone and tablet. Around 2 percent can remotely control their lighting, 2 percent their shutters, or blinds and 1 percent a connected smoke detector. About 11 percent expect to acquire an alarm within the year.

The 20-29 age group seem to have embraced connected devices the most. The age group has a higher than average number of remotely controlled lighting (5%), shutters or blinds (4%) and baby monitor (3%). The baby monitor is a logical remote device to have for this age group.
