Swisscom on track to supply 90% of population with 5G by year-end

The CEO of Swisscom, Urs Schaeppi, said that the company is on track to supply 90 percent of the Swiss population with 5G by the end of the year, NZZ am Sonntag reports.

In a first phase, Swisscom wants to reach broad coverage of Switzerland as quickly as possible, for which it will not have to build many new antennas, the CEO said. Customers can already use 5G as standard with their current subscriptions, albeit with a speed limit. In a second phase, more antennas would have to be built, or the limit would have to be increased in order to offer faster connections, he said.

Swisscom's strategy is to offer cloud-based or IT services and IoT applications to add revenues through 5G. The likelihood that companies could increase revenues directly through 5G network services is "relatively small", he said. The CEO also expects that 80 percent of the population in Switzerland will use 5G smartphones and applications in the next five years.
