UK govt announces launch of new 5G testing lab to support open RAN push

The new UK government has announced the launch of a new 5G testing lab that is expected to help increase network security and resilience. The new Sonic Labs will allow new network technology to be simulated in a real-world environment.

The project, backed by GBP 1 million of seed funding from the government, is expected to help accelerate the adoption of Open RAN technology, a major part of the government's 5G Diversification Strategy to help build a more innovative and secure 5G supply chain. Sonic Labs has facilities in London and Brighton, and will be run by Ofcom and Digital Catapult. It will work with a wide range of vendors including Radisys, Mavenir, Accelleran, Effnet, Druid, Phluido and Benetel.
