Unitymedia to end analogue TV service in June 2017
German cable operator Unitymedia has announced plans to end analogue TV transmissions on 30 June 2017. It is working with media authorities in North Rhine Westphalia, Hessen and Baden-Wuerttemberg to inform customers and consumers about the plans.

The city of Hanau is the first to go fully digital, and Unitymedia said it will use the experience in the pilot city to prepare for the analogue switch-off across the network. It will also benefit from the experiences of sister companies UPC Cablecom and UPC Austria on ending analogue services. 

German cable association Anga has set a deadline for end-2018 for cable operators to move to digital. Terrestrial and satellite services in Germany are already fully digital.

Anga says 17.9 mln German households watch cable TV in 2015

Cable network operator association Anga said there are approximately 17.9 million households in Germany watching cable TV, with an increasing variety of services available from its members. As part of its report 'German broadband cable 2016', it said services like TV Everywhere, time-shifting, VoD and Ultra HD, mean Anga companies can compete well with alternative technologies.

Anga says German cable network customers grow as speeds rise

German cable network operator association Anga said that by December 2015, broadband at a minimum of 50 Mbps was available on 72.0 percent of cable networks and 33.2 percent of (V)DSL, FTTB and FTTH grids. In its report 'German Broadband Cable 2016', it said 44 percent of cable network customers subscribed to a 50 Mbps service or faster by then, a rise of 26 percent from the previous year.

Unitymedia upgrades Lollar network for superfast broadband

German cable network operator Unitymedia has started to upgrade its network in the Ruttershausen district of Lollar to EuroDOCSIS 3.0. This will allow the company to offer superfast internet connections up to 200 Mbps.

Unitymedia upgrades network in Luedenscheid

Unitymedia announced plans to connect Luedenscheid and Wilnsdorf to its faster network. If the street affected by the works is already connected to the provider's cable network, Unitymedia offers to bear the connection costs of up to EUR 1,500 if the homeowner concludes a contract of a higher-quality bundle with a minimum of two services.

Unitymedia turns off anlogue cable TV in Hanau

German cable network operator Unitymedia confirmed that Hanau will become the first 'digital city' as it migrates to a full-digital TV service. Analogue TV transmissions will end for more than 45,000 customers in Hanau on 20 September 2016. Unitymedia earlier announced that all analogue TV transmissions would end by 30 June 2017.

Unitymedia discounts high-speed internet tariffs

German cable operator Unitymedia is cutting the cost of its high-speed tariffs (120 Mbps+) in April and May. It is offering a discount for new customers subscribing to a double-play or triple-play package during this period, including the new 2play MAX 400 and 3play MAX 400 tariffs with 400 Mbps internet connections. They will get a discount of EUR 10 per month for the duration of a 24-month contract, for a total saving of EUR 150.

Unitymedia upgrades networks, adds more HD channels

German cable operator Unitymedia has announced a network upgrade in Nachrodt-Wiblingwerde and Drolshagen to provide support superfast broadband speeds of up to 100 Mbps. The upgrade will cover around 250 homes in Nachrodt-Wiblingwerde and around 500 more in Drolshagen. Unitymedia will spend up to EUR 1,500 per household to connect them its fibre-optic network. Unitymedia reports EBITDA up 11 percent in Q4

German cable operator Unitymedia reported adjusted EBITDA up 11 percent in Q4 2015 to EUR 359 million, and revenue grew 4 percent to EUR 554 million. The company added 316,000 revenue-generating units in all of 2015, including 94,000 in Q4, and saw 7 percent growth in monthly ARPU per customer during the year.

Unitymedia to fully digitise TV in one German city

Unitymedia announced it will continue the digitisation of cable television in the new year, resulting in the cancellation of further analogue channels. For the second half of year, the cable operator plans to launch the first digital-only city. The city has to be yet to be determined.

German digital TV households up by 15.2% in H1

Cable remains the most popular form of TV transmission in Germany at 46.1 percent, but the trend towards digitisation continues. A total of 72.5 percent of all cable households in Germany received digital television in June 2015, an increase of 1.7 million households (15.2%) compared with the previous year. So says the Digitisation Report 2015 conducted by TNS Infratest on behalf of Unitymedia, the state media authorities and other partners.
