Inmarsat lanceert EAN-satelliet met Arianespace
Inmarsat heeft een contract gesloten met Arianespace voor de lancering van zijn S-band satelliet voor het European Aviation Network (EAN). De nieuwe satelliet zal worden gelanceerd door de Ariane 5-draagraket die werd ontwikkeld door de European Space Agency (ESA) en het Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales. Naar verwachting zal de lancering mid-2017 plaatsvinden vanaf het Guiana Space Center in Kourou, Frans Guyana.

Het Duitse Fraunhofer technologie-instituut werkt samen met het eveneens Duitse Work Microwave (satellietcommunicatie) en het Britse Avanti Communications (provider van communicatiediensten via satelliet) in de implementatie van een DVB-S2X wideband transmissie systeem via satelliet, inclusief modulator en demodulator. Het consortium heeft al veldproeven uitgevoerd waarbij doorvoersnelheden van meer dan 1 Gbps bereikt werden via het Avanti Hylas-platform.

Inmarsat bouwt Wi-Fi in meer dan 1.000 vliegtuigen

Inmarsat meldt dat het nu meer dan duizend vliegtuigen heeft voorzien van Wi-Fi of daarvoor een bestelling heeft genoteerd. Het bedrijf maakte het getal bekend tijdens een evenement op de vakbeurs Aircraft Interiors Expo (AIX) in Hamburg op 4 april. GX Aviation van Inmarsat en European Aviation Network (EAN) leveren breedbanddiensten via satelliet. Klanten zijn onder meer Lufthansa Group, International Airlines Group (IAG), Air New Zealand, Singapore Airlines, Norwegian Air en Air Asia.

Inmarsat voltooit test met EAN in Griekenland

Inmarsat heeft naar eigen zeggen een succesvolle test gehouden met een Satellite Access Station (SAS) in Griekenland. SAS is onderdeel van het European Aviation Network (EAN). EAN werd ontwikkeld door Deutsche Telecom, Immarsat, Nokia en Thales en is het eerste netwerk waarbij een netwerk aan antennes op de grond wordt gecombineerd met communicatie via satellieten. Inmarsat entered into a contract with Arianespace to launch its S-band satellite for the European Aviation Network (EAN) on an Ariane 5 heavy lift launch vehicle. Deutsche Telekom en Inmarsat geven boost aan in-flight connectivity

Deutsche Telekom en Inmarsat startten eind september vorig jaar de ontwikkeling van EAN waarbij Inmarsat garant stond voor de connectiviteit van zijn nieuwe S-band satelliet terwijl DT zorg droeg voor de internetverbinding aan de grond. Tot de overige technologiepartners behoren Nokia en Thales. De verwachting is dat Europese luchtreizigers medio 2017 de beschikking krijgen over een breedbandinternetverbinding.

EAN conducts 1st tests of LTE satellite internet for planes

The European Aviation Network (EAN), the first ground-to-air network for in-flight broadband services, has conducted its first test flights in the UK. The EAN is operated by satellite operator Inmarsat and its mobile network partner Deutsche Telekom, along with equipment suppliers Nokia and Thales. Cobham Satcom's Aviator 300D and Inmarsat's SwiftBroadband-Safety (SB-S) have enabled in-air connected Electronic Flight Bags (EFBs) for the first time. The live EFB capability was achieved as part of a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) supervised technology evaluation with Hawaiian Airlines (HAL) to monitor the transmission of communications data over SB-S on the first-ever commercial flights to use Inmarsat's IP-based broadband service on the flight deck.
