EU committees vote against ACTA
Three EU parliamentary committees have voted against the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA), the BBC reports. The Committee on Legal Affairs (Juri), Committee on Civil Liberties (LIBE) and the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) all voted to express "opinions against Acta". They were tasked with assessing its legality and impact on civil liberties and industry, ahead of a planned vote by the full parliament in July. Their views will now be considered by the larger International Trade Committee (Inta), which will in turn make a formal recommendation to the European Parliament. Inta will vote on the matter on 21 June. Separately, the European Commission has referred the matter to the European Court of Justice to judge whether ACTA complied with human-rights laws.

Dutch govt refrains from action on ACTA

The caretaker government in the Netherlands will not sign the ACTA, according to a statement from the responsible ministers to parliament. The European Parliament's International Trade Committee has recommended that parliament vote against the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement. Nineteen MEPs on the committee voted against the ACTA, and twelve in favour. Dutch Parliament votes against ACTA

Dutch Parliament has not ratified the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA), after a majority in the Lower Chamber voted against it. The European Commission and EU member states are expected to approve the ACTA treaty on 26 January at a conference in Japan, the BBC reports. The Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement has already been signed by the US, Australia, Japan, Canada, South Korea and other countries. The treaty aims to increase international coordination of the fight against counterfeit goods and online piracy.
