HP makes webOS open source
HP announced it will make the webOS software open source. HP will make the underlying code of the former Palm software available under an open source licence, allowing developers, partners, HP engineers and other hardware manufacturers to deliver ongoing enhancements and new versions. HP earlier halted its own development of products based on webOS, after its tablets and smartphones failed to take off and compete well against the Android and Apple platforms. The company said the aim of the open-source project is to accelerate further development of the webOS platform, and HP will remain an "active participant and investor" in the project. HP also will contribute ENYO, the application framework for webOS, to the open-source community in the near future, along with a plan for the remaining components of the Palm user space. The company opened a forum on the plans at developer.palm.com/blog.
