
Samsung expands Galaxy smartphone range

Samsung Electronics announced an expansion its its popular Galaxy line of smartphones. The company said future Galaxy phones will be branded under a new naming system, using five classes identified by a single alphabetical letter. These include 'S' for 'super smart' devices at the top of the range, R to mark 'royal' or 'refined' devices in the premium class, 'W' for 'wonder' to mark high-quality devices balancing style and performance, 'M' for 'magical' devices that offer high performance at an affordable price, and 'Y' for 'young' on entry-level models for emerging markets or a younger audience. In addition to the letters, Samsung may add the tags 'Pro' for qwerty devices aimed at professionals, 'Plus' for upgrades of earlier models and 'LTE' for next-generation phones. Alongside the new naming system, Samsung announced four new Android 2.3 phones: the Galaxy W, Galaxy M Pro, Galaxy Y and Galaxy Y Pro. The Galaxy W comes with a 1.4GHz processor, HSDPA at up to 14.4 Mbps and a 3.7-inch touch screen. It also features Samsung's Game, Social and Music Hubs and Kies Air for tracking the device. The Galaxy M Pro is aimed at 'young and sociable professionals'. In addition to a qwerty keypad, it has an optical track pad and touch screen and supports business applications such as Exchange Active Sync, Sybase Afaria, Cisco Mobile and Cisco WebEx. The compact Galaxy Y is aimed at young social network users. It features an 832MHz processor, Samsung's TouchWiz user interface and the Swype application for quick typing. It will be available in a number of colours. The Galaxy Y Pro adds a qwerty keypad, Wi-Fi Direct, ThinkFree mobile office software and the Social Hub Premium, for integrated email, social networking and instant messaging. While no pricing or availability details were released by Samsung, operator 3 UK said it will soon stock the Galaxy W.
