Samsung warns for profit hit in Q4, Q1

After lowering its guidance for the third quarter on the back of its Galaxy Note 7 woes, Samsung said it expects a drop in revenue to continue affecting profits the following two quarters. The company said the move will have a negative impact of mid KRW 3 trillion (EUR 2.4 billion) on its operating profit from the fourth quarter of this year through the first quarter of next year. The impact is expected to be in the mid KRW 2 trillion range for Q4 2016 sales and KRW 1 trillion for Q1 2017.

Moving forward, Samsung Electronics plans to normalize its mobile business by expanding the sale of flagship models such as the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge. The company said it will also focus on enhancing product safety for consumers by making significant changes in its quality assurance processes.

Samsung profits fall on costs of Note 7 recall

Samsung reported third-quarter results down in line with its earlier profit warning, after the recall of its failed Galaxy Note 7 smartphone. Sales fell to KRW 47.82 trillion from KRW 51.68 trillion a year ago, and operating profit dropped to KRW 5.20 trillion from KRW 7.39 trillion. Samsung said the US Department of Transportation has ordered a full out ban on all Galaxy Note 7 devices on flights, valid for both carry-on and checked baggage . Samsung expands US recall to all Note 7 devices

Samsung Electronics America has expanded its voluntary recall of the Galaxy Note 7 to include all original and replacement Galaxy Note 7 devices sold or exchanged in the US States before and after the original recall in September. The company stopped the production, sale and exchange of the product on 10 October. Samsung has revised its guidance for the third quarter downwards, on the back of its woes with the relaunched Galaxy Note 7. The company now expects revenues at KRW 46-48 trillion and the operating profit at KRW 5.1-5.3 trillion. Samsung had earlier guided for revenues at KRW 48-50 trillion and operating profit at KRW 7.7-7.9 trillion.

South Korea starts Galaxy Note 7 safety probe

The Korean government has launched an investigation into the safety of Samsung's Galaxy Note 7 smartphones following new battery problems, The Korea Times reports. The Korea Agency for Technology and Standards (KATS), a state-run organization under the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, is in charge of the investigation. A similar investigation is also under way in the US and Taiwan.
