Toyota, NTT partner on 5G technology for self-driving cars

Toyota Motor will cooperate with Nippon Telegraph & Telephone (NTT) on high-speed wireless technology, in an attempt to offer safer self-driving vehicles. Toyota and NTT plan to jointly develop 5G technology for connected cars, Nikkei repots. The project includes big-data analysis and artificial intelligence applications. Toyota and NTT are expected to officially announce their partnership agreement later this month.

NTT will use 5G technology currently under development by its main research arm as well as other group companies. NTT will also provide assistance in AI. The partnership with Toyota paves the way for expansion into autonomous driving.

Toyota is already collaborating with Japanese operator KDDI to develop connected cars utilizing 4G signals. The automaker plans to partner KDDI on 5G technology as well.

Germany's carmakers are interested in setting up their own 5G networks, to support their plans to start producing self-driving cars by 2021. According to a report from Handelsblatt, the big auto groups are already in talks with the telecom regulator on obtaining the necessary spectrum.

Toyota Motor said it will invest nearly USD 3 billion in cooperation with two local automotive components manufacturers to build software for autonomous cars, writes the Wall Street Journal. Together with Denso and Aisin Seiki, Toyota will create a new Tokyo-based company called Toyota Research Institute-Advance Development. The companies said they would invest JPY 300 billion (USD 2.8 billion) in it. The company will start with around 300 employees and will reach around 1,000 staff.

Norwegian telecoms regulator Nkom said it aims to facilitate testing for 5G mobile services and applications such as the IoT, driverless cars and intelligent transport systems, and is inviting the industry to get in touch in order to obtain experimental licences.
