Average price and speed of consumer broadband packages in Western Europe increase by 4%
During the period from Q4 2010 to end Q1 2011, total average price of consumer broadband packages in Western Europe increased by 4% and the total average speed of those packages increased by 4.2%. Consumers are still best off with a triple play package. The price/speed difference compared to dual and single play packages continues to stand in favour of triple play with flat rate. Consumers in Sweden, France and Portugal pay the best rate when comparing price and speed. Next to triple play flat rate, the packages offered via a FTTx connection offer the best value for money, they are 1.5 times more expensive than DSL, but over 4 times faster.

Triple Play flat-rate offers the best deal, on average

Out of the 15 Western European countries examined, Belgium offered the most choices of different packages for consumers, the Netherlands ranked second. Also, Triple Play flat-rate still offered the best price/speed deal, offering a 9% higher price with a 39% higher speed than average. Consumers continued to be best off with an FTTx connection, where available, offering an average price per Mbps of EUR 0.71 compared to EUR 2.26 per Mbps for ADSL. Since Q1 2011 Sweden, France, Portugal still offer the lowest price per Mbps and Germany now also offered an average price per Mbps below EUR 1.00.

Average monthly broadband cost decreases

In Q4 2010 the best value for money for broadband packages is offered in France, Portugal and Sweden. The average monthly cost across all countries has decreased compared to the previous quarter. At the same time, the average speed increased by 17 percent in comparison with the third quarter of 2010. Triple play packages continue to offer the highest speeds. This quarter Portugal has the highest average speed measured across the various packages offered, at 54.45 Mbps. The year 2010 saw a large increase of number of packages offered across the countries.
