DNA blocks 9 mln fraud attempts in 2025

Telenor's Finnish arm, DNA, said it blocked more than 8.5 million fraud attempts in 2025, made up for 4.2 million scam calls and almost 4.4 million fraudulent SMS. Ilkka Tuominen, head of fraud prevention at DNA, warned customers to be particularly vigilant of swindle attempts that use seasonal topics such as the tax refund period, sales promotions or events such as St Valentine's Day as the basis for their messages or calls.

Icelandic operator Nova said that chief operating officer (COO) Renata Bloendal has tendered her resignation. She joined the company in 2023 and held roles in strategy, business development and services since then. Bloendal will provide support during the transitional period but Nova did not mention any successor. CEO Syvlia Kristin Olafsdottir wished Bloendal well in her future career.

Mediacom confirms founder's son as new CEO

US operator Mediacom Communications has confirmed Giuseppe Commisso as its new chairman and CEO. He took over as interim CEO already following the recent death of his father, Rocco Commisso, Mediacom's founder and previous chair and CEO. The son has spent nearly 20 years working at Mediacom already, and is also president of the Italian football club ACF Fiorentina.

The local fibre operator Glasvezel Edam-Volendam announced it is near to 12,500 homes passed, with around 10,000 activated customers. That means only a few hundred premises still need to be covered with FTTP, and the network roll-out should be completed this summer. After that, cable operator Ziggo can start shutting down its coax network in the Dutch city.

Moscow runs out of power for new data centres

​Power supplies for data centres are exhausted in Moscow, reports Vedomosti citing multiple industry sources. Suppliers are refusing any new contracts to connect data centres as the available power resources are already used or reserved for new data centres planned to come online in the period 2026 to 2028. As a result, businesses are forced to look for sites to build data centres in other regions.

Mexico sets up working group to guarantee 2026 World Cup connectivity

Mexico's Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (CRT) has set up a working group with the country's main mobile operators and several public and private entities to ensure network connectivity during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by Mexico, the United States and Canada. The initiative aims to meet connectivity demand from residents and the estimated 5.5 million visitors expected across the host cities of Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey in June and July.

Beeline Uzbekistan announced that its subsidiary Beelab, in partnership with Uzbekistan's national payment system Uzcard, has launched the Uzcard Pay contactless payment service, making NFC payments available for Uzcard cards via Android smartphones for the first time. The service uses tokenisation to provide an additional level of security and reduce the risk of fraud.

Infinera to power Neterra's EUR 12 million backbone network upgrade in Bulgaria

Neterra has launched a large-scale modernization of its Bulgarian backbone network, using Infinera technology. Neterra plans to invest EUR 12 million in the project. Neterra's Bulgarian network uses DWDM technology. While the current system supports up to 200 Gigabits per channel, the new equipment is expected to boost this capacity to 800 Gigabits (and even 1.2 Terabits) per channel.

Paratus switches on East Africa fibre link connecting DRC's Goma to Kenyan coast

Paratus Group has switched on a major new fibre route in East Africa, directly connecting Mombasa on the Kenyan coast to Goma in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) through a protected terrestrial network. The 2,000 km G2M (Goma-to-Mombasa) fibre route runs via Kigali (Rwanda), Kampala (Uganda) and Nairobi (Kenya), with direct interconnections into key data centres in each city. The route is now live and already carrying traffic for its first wholesale customers.
