Viaplay extends UEFA men's football competiton rights in Denmark, Norway and Finland to 2031

Viaplay Group said it has extended its exclusive rights to show men's UEFA Champions League football in Denmark, and the exclusive rights to the UEFA Europa League and UEFA Conference League in Norway and Finland, for four years from autumn 2027 until 2031. The Danish extension makes Viaplay the only broadcaster in the world to have shown every match from the UEFA Champions League since the tournament began in 1992.

Waystream buys Tellus Fiber for SEK 30 mln in cash and shares to expand to new segments

Waystream Group has announced its acquisition of Tellus Fiber for SEK 30 million in cash and shares to strengthen its position in its current market and reach new customer segments, too. The deal underpins Waystream's aim to increase its sales of optical transceivers and will help it to achieve its long-term financial targets. Tellus Fiber was founded in 2023 and sells fibre-optic equipment including optical transceivers and other network products to customers of varying size.

Three new Motorola Razr handsets will launch in May, with updated Razr Ultra and Razr models joining the new Razr+ tier and the evolved Razr Fold announced at Lenovo Tech World in January. The 2026 Razr Ultra is billed as the most powerful handset in Motorola's Razr line-up, boasting a 50 megapixel camera system and upgraded sensor designed to capture up to six times more dynamic range versus the previous version.

Claro Colombia extends 5G to four more cities

Claro Colombia, a subsidiary of America Movil, said it has further expanded its 5G network to the cities of Caucasia in Antioquia, Sibaté in Cundinamarca, and Acacías and San Martín in the Meta department. As a result, the fifth-generation network is now available to customers with compatible phones in 63 cities and municipalities across the territory.

Canal Plus announced new agreements to show Uefa's club tournaments. After extending its rights in France last year, the pay-TV company has now acquired exclusive rights to all three Uefa tournaments in Belgium and extended its contract in Poland for the Champions League. In addition, it has bought rights to the Europa and Conference leagues in Austria and extended its deal for one match per game day in French in Switzerland.

NEC annual telecom profits fall after restructuring, lower revenues

NEC saw profits at its telecom business more than halve in its fiscal year to March 2026, as the company worked on a strategic shift in base stations and more profitable submarine systems. Annual revenues fell 5.2 percent to JPY 390.5 billion, and the adjusted operating profit dropped to JPY 20.0 billion from JPY 50.6 billion the previous year, in line with its forecasts issued in January. NEC is targeting improved margins in the new year, helped by turning the submarine business profitable.

Egyptian ICT minister Raafat Hendy has met with Taha Khalifa, Intel's general manager for the Middle East and Africa, to discuss ways of enhancing cooperation in technological infrastructure, digital capacity building, AI and cybersecurity. The two sides agreed to draft a Memorandum of Understanding to deepen cooperation in several fields, including training to develop digital skills among government employees and senior officials, as well as support for ministry initiatives.

Zimbabwe's active mobile phone subscriptions increased by 2.13 percent to 16.78 million in the fourth quarter to December 2025 from 16.43 million in Q3, according to the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) sector performance report 2025. The mobile penetration rate rose by 2.21 percentage points to 107.04 percent from 104.83 percent. Econet and NetOne increased their subscribers by 2.56 percent and 0.95 percent respectively, whilst Telecel's customer based was down by 0.5

Global smartphone shipments up 1% in Q1, Samsung retakes top spot

Worldwide smartphone shipments unexpectedly rose 1 percent year on year to 298.5 million units in the first quarter of 2026, according to the latest figures from Omdia that contrasted with recent reports of an annual decline. The result was attributed to vendors accelerating shipments ahead of anticipated cost increases in memory and other components. However, persistent inflation continued to dampen consumer demand and is expected to trigger a correction later in the year, said the researcher.

Russian satellite TV operator Tricolor has agreed additional transponders on the satellite Express-AT2 with the state-owned satellite communications company RSCC, reports Izvestia. Kazakhstan operator Kcell announced that Kerey Zatilda was dismissed as CTO and member of the management board in a decision by the management council. The Latvian government has decided that a group of state-owned or partially state-owned companies will develop the electronic voting system for general elections, reports Db.lv. BT has partnered with UK broadcaster Clare Balding on a new campaign to encourage the remaining analogue landline customers to switch to digital landlines. Telenet defends price changes after negative press

Belgium operator Telenet has defended its recent price changes, following negative media coverage focused on the increase in its entry-level price for broadband. In a statement entitled "setting the facts straight", Telenet said the changes had been misinterpreted by some politicians and media. There is no increase in prices for existing customers and they will not be forced to switch to new subscriptions, the company said.

The electronic communications market in the Republic of Moldova saw steady growth in 2025, driven by increased demand for high-speed connectivity and mobile data, according to a report from telecoms regulator Anrceti. Total market revenue rose by 4.2 percent to RON 6.64 billion, while infrastructure investments increased by 2.4 percent to RON 1.48 billion.

Sunrise raises mobile and internet subscription prices from 01 August

Swiss operator Sunrise will increase the prices of mobile and Internet subscriptions for private and business customers by CHF 1.50 per month, from 01 August. The increase applies to new and existing customers.
