Starlink wins licence to operate in Cote d'Ivoire from July

Starlink will launch commercial fixed satellite internet services in Cote d'Ivoire in July, Space in Africa reported. Regulator ARTCI has granted operational authorisation to Starlink Network CIV for twelve months. Djibril Ouattara, the minister of digital transition and technological innovation, said the licence lets Starlink offer services that can connect schools, health centres and remote rural areas that previously lacked internet access.

Brazil and the European Union have formalised a Digital Partnership to establish international cooperation in critical areas such as data governance, AI, 5G and 6G network infrastructure development, high-capacity connectivity, and digital public goods and services platforms. Beyond bilateral initiatives, the partnership will also involve political coordination in major global forums like the UN, G20, ITU, Unesco and ICANN, as well as technical standardisation bodies such as ISO, IEEE and 3GPP.

Vodafone Spain cuts price of international roaming bundles

Vodafone Spain (Zegona) has refreshed its international roaming offer, cutting prices by 50 to 60 percent in several countries and introducing new bundles. The dedicated bundles start at EUR 3 a day for 3GB in the US, Hawaii and Alaska, while customers travelling to Colombia, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Japan, Egypt, Thailand, Qatar and up to 25 destinations can now access 1GB for EUR 3 a day, down from EUR 10 in most cases.

KPN HR chief leaves for new job at ING

Hilde Garssen, the Chief People Officer at KPN, is leaving the Dutch operator at the end of August for a new position at the bank ING. She will become Chief HR Officer there and join the Management Board Banking. Garssen leads HR at KPN since the end of 2018 and is a board director since December 2019. Her replacement will be announced following a recruitment procedure, KPN said.

T-Systems, the subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom, has won a contract to set up ​Volkswagen's private cloud and operate it globally. Volkswagen is establishing the group's private cloud 2.0 to host new IT applications, migrate existing applications to the cloud, and complement the group's in-house IT infrastructure. The German carmaker will process data within the group going forward, lowering costs while increasing independence and improving security.

Tanzanian telephone subscriptions rise by nearly 5% in Q1

Tanzania's telecom subscriptions increased by 4.6 percent to 111.91 million in the first quarter ended March 2026 from 106.9 million in December 2025, bringing the telecom penetration rate to a record 159.8 percent, according to the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA). Mobile subscriptions accounted for 99.9 percent (111.79 million) of the total, while fixed subscriptions made up the remaining 0.1 percent (111,933).

CableLabs, a nonprofit R&D group for the cable industry and other broadband vendors, has sanctioned additional cable modems from GemTek, Hitron, MaxLinear, Sagemcom, Ubee and Sercomm as meeting its Docsis 3.1 interoperability specification. The Docsis 3.1 Verified for Interoperability (VFI) programme is considered a stepping stone to CableLabs' full Docsis 4.0 certification. It is intended to demonstrate multi-vendor interoperability on contemporary cable broadband infrastructures.

TTCL accelerates fibre expansion in Arusha

The Tanzania Telecommunications Corporation (TTCL) director-general Moremi Marwa has visited Arusha to review the expansion and performance of the company's TTCL Faiba high-speed internet service. The inspections in local residential areas align with the state-owned corporation's commitment to delivering quality, reliable digital connectivity. Marwa inspected Moshono ward to review its active Faiba service. The high-speed connectivity is also operational in Themi, Engutoto and Baraa wards.

Ratings agency Moody's has followed S&P Global in downgrading the credit rating of Mexico's Grupo Televisa to 'Ba2' from 'Ba1'. Italian wholesale-only operator Open Fiber has finalised the cabling of its FTTH infrastructure in nearly two dozen new localities in the northeastern Veneto region. A total of 61,000 homes, commercial premises and offices across 23 localities in the in the provinces of Verona and Vicenza have been connected to the fibre network, allowing residents and businesses to access the internet at speeds of up to 2.5 Gbps via operator partners.

Neterra, an authorized reseller of Starlink by SpaceX, has announced price reductions across its portfolio of Starlink satellite terminals. Starlink terminals are now available for purchase in 156 territories worldwide. Neterra reports that customers in 129 territories can benefit from discounts exceeding 15 percent, while 99 territories can now access reductions ranging from 50 percent to 80 percent on selected products.

Anthropic withdraws top AI models after US security objections

Anthropic has withdrawn access to its most advanced AI models following security concerns expressed by the US government. The US authorities issued an export ban on the company's Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models, meaning no foreigners, in the US or elsewhere, even those working at Anthropic, can use the models legally. Anthropic says this means it must block use of the models for everyone in order to ensure compliance. Its other models are unaffected.
