Baroness Lane-Fox to lead London AI and Jobs Taskforce

Technology businesswomen Baroness Martha Lane-Fox has been appointed by London Mayor Sadiq Khan as Chair of the new London AI and Jobs Taskforce. The taskforce will include experts from business, government, trade unions, the AI industry and the skills sector to review the impact of AI on jobs in London; identify risks and opportunities for employers and Londoners; and provide recommendations and advice on boosting AI skills.

Telus has reported consolidated operating revenues and other income of CAD 5 billion for Q1 2026, compared to CAD 5.01 billion a year earlier; with consolidated service revenue growth of 1 percent offset by lower mobile equipment and other revenue. The service revenue growth was driven by Telus Health; customer growth across mobile, consumer broadband, TV, security and automation; and higher residential broadband revenue per customer.

Telephone & Data Systems (TDS) has announced a proposal to acquire all the outstanding public shares it does not already own in Array Digital Infrastructure, by way of a merger. The all-stock deal proposes exchanging each Array common share not owned by TDS for 0.86 of TDS common share. The proposed transaction is designed to streamline corporate structure and boost capital flexibility to support long-term growth for TDS.

Lumen Technologies has announced plans for a USD 1 billion senior notes offering due 2037, issued through wholly-owned subsidiary Level 3 Financing. Some of the net proceeds will be used to buy Existing Group Tender Notes and cover related fees and expenses. The 7.500% Senior Notes were priced to investors at 100 percent of their aggregate principal amount and will mature on 15 February 2037.

The 50 meter mast increases capacity for comprehensive and stable 5G and 4G coverage around the Mulde Reservoir recreation area, including the festival grounds on the Pouch peninsula. The Sputnik Spring Break festival attracts tens of thousands of visitors each year, and the new mast arrives just in time for this year's event from 22 to 25 May.

German IT services provider Bechtle said revenues increases by 7.6 percent year-on-year in the first quarter of 2026 to EUR 1.60 billion, on the back of rising business volume. Business volume climbed by 13.2 percent to EUR 2.2 billion. The increase in business volume was particularly strong in Europe, at 29.3 percent, while the other segments showed double-digit or high single-digit growth rates. Teleste reported higher earnings in the three months to March, having benefited from efforts to shore up gross margins, streamline costs and diversify its product mix. Norwegian telecoms regulator Nkom said the Ministry of Digitisation and Public Administration has commissioned it to look into introducing more stringent back-up power requirements for the mobile network. It expects to publish a final report on the matter in March 2027.

Swedish regulator finds Telia compliant with emergency call relay rules

Swedish telecoms regulator PTS said it has found Telia Company to be compliant with the rules for transmitting emergency calls, following a review that started last year. The watchdog was concerned that the shutdowns of Sweden's 2G and 3G networks would prevent some mobile phones from being able to reach the emergency number 112, even though they were using 4G.

Canalink invests over EUR 1 mln in Fuerteventura subsea cable

Canalink announced a EUR 1.24 million investment to secure rights to use two-fibre optic links needed to deploy a new submarine cable branch connecting Costa Calma and Puerto del Rosario on the island of Fuerteventura. The Tenerife-based neutral operator said the branch will link the southern part of the island to its Base 4 cable system via a submarine bifurcation unit, with onward connectivity through Reintel's terrestrial fibre network.

Elisa takes part in Finnish Border Guard drone detection trial

Elisa said it is taking part in a pilot project with the Finnish Border Guard (Rajavartiolaitos) and Sensofusion for drone detection in southeast Finland.  Sensofusion is providing the drone detection system and Elisa is supplying the digital infrastructure. The three parties will each be responsible for their own costs. The trial period runs until 30 September this year but the scheme could be extended.

The Dutch company AI Mills is seeking investors to support the construction of a distributed network of small AI data centres around the country. The company said the modular data centres offer a more flexible option for businesses and organisations looking for access to AI computing power and sovereign hosting in compliance with EU regulations.

Amper buys critical comms firm Teltronic for up to EUR 225 mln

Spain's Grupo Amper said it has signed a binding agreement with private equity fund manager Nazca to acquire Zaragoza-based critical communications specialist Teltronic for up to EUR 225 million. The purchase price consists of a fixed amount of EUR 155 million and a maximum earn-out of EUR 45 million, subject to the achievement of a series of targets. Amper has also agreed to assume EUR 25 million of Teltronic's debt.

Vodacom Congo employees have completed a three-day intensive emergency response training as part of the Vodafone Foundation's 'Instant Network Mission – DRC Hub' initiative, TechreviewAfrica reported. This programme equips local volunteers with the skills needed to deploy and manage vital connectivity during humanitarian crises. The training from 05-07 May brought together around 20 Vodacom employees.

MainMoney launched a palm-based biometric payment system in Kinshasa, Wearetech reported. It allows users to make payments without a bank card or mobile phone, using the palm of their hand as a unique identifier for biometric authentication. The system relies on "palm vein" technology, which analyzes the internal vein pattern of the hand to identify each user.
