Ukraine to optimise use of 2,600 MHz band

Ukrainian national telecommunications regulator NKEK has issued a draft amendment to the plan for the use of telecom spectrum resources. The draft document has been sent to the Ministry of Digital Transformation for approval. The changes focus on optimising the use of the 2,600 MHz band.

MTS Belarus offers 5G on Samsung Galaxy S26 series smartphones

MTS Belarus said it has expanded the list of devices supporting 5G services on its network to Samsung's Galaxy S26 series of smartphones, namely the standard Galaxy S26, the S26+ and the S26 Ultra. The operator provides 5G services using more than 1,100 base stations located in Minsk, Brest, Vitebsk, Gomel and Mogilyov.

French telecom authority Arcep has issued publications as part of its environmental remit. In particular, these new reports aim to improve and share insight on the impact of the digital sector and generative AI on Earth's resources, drawing on indicators collected by Arcep, expert knowledge, and scientific literature. The information gathered directly by Arcep is summarised in a study based on 2024 data, covering data centre facilities, network equipment, telecom operators' networks and device manufacturing

Ad-supported tiers account for 80% of new Nordic streaming subscriptions

Eighty percent of new Nordic streaming subscriptions in the past year were for advertising-supported services, according to consultancy Mediavision's 'Nordic TV & Streaming' analysis for spring. This is a "major shift" in the region's streaming landscape, it said. The Nordic market now exceeds 27 million paid streaming subscriptions, up by approximately 3.5 million since spring 2025, and the growth is mainly from hybrid video on demand (HVoD) subscriptions, combining lower prices with advertising.

The European Commission has adopted a plan to auction key spectrum in the 2 GHz band for satellite direct-to-device services. It includes a proposal to reserve part of the frequencies for the public sector network Iris and another share for EU service providers. The aim is to auction the EU-wide licences before the current permits expire in May 2027.

Telefonica to hike price of Netflix packages

Telefonica confirmed it will follow its O2 brand and rivals including Vodafone in raising the cost of its TV and convergent packages with Netflix due to the latter's decision to increase its monthly subscription prices. Starting on 27 July, the price of Movistar packages with Netflix will rise by EUR 1 to EUR 2 a month depending on whether or not they come with ads.

Deutsche Telekom lifts data volume on mobile broadband plans

Deutsche Telekom is increasing data volume of its MagentaMobil Data plans for new and existing customers. Aimed at laptop and tablet users, the new MagentaMobil Data S includes 10 GB for EUR 14.95 per month, MagentaMobil Data M comes with 40 GB for EUR 19.95 per month, and MagentaMobil Data L offers 80 GB for EUR 29.95 per month. Customers can subscribe to the plans for 24 months, or via the Flex option without a minimum contract term.

The user base of the Polish electronic government mobile application mObywatel has passed 12 million. The base has doubled in 30 months, from 5.7 million at the end of 2023. On average, 1.5 million users log on to the application daily.

German govt approves bill to require streamers invest in local productions

The German government has approved a draft law obliging streaming services and broadcasters to invest in local production. The bill proposes a minimum 8 percent of their annual revenues in Germany go to local productions. In addition, there are sub-quotas for investments in German-language content, independent producers, and new productions, as well as requirements for a fair sharing of rights with independent producers.

Orange Poland has appointed Pawel Gembicki the new transformation and digitisation director for its wholesale business. Gembicki earlier worked as director for corporate strategy in the company. He replaces Malgorzata Michalska-Medrek in his new position.

Kyivstar expands renewable energy portfolio with acquisition of 6 solar power plants

Ukrainian operator Kyivstar, a subsidiary of the Veon Group, has completed the acquisition of six solar power plants in the Lviv region of Ukraine, with a combined installed capacity of 105 MW, for a total consideration of USD 80.8 million (UAH 3.6 billion). The solar assets being acquired generated approximately 113 GWh of electricity, while delivering approximately UAH 682 million of revenue and UAH 596 million of EBITDA in FY 2025, based on unaudited accounts.

O2 Czech Republic has introduced to members of its loyalty programme Unity an opportunity to use the 'Fast Track' when entering the Arena O2. Gigabit broadband was available to 96.3 percent of households at the end of 2025, according to Norwegian telecoms regulator Nkom. Its new Coverage Report says 100 Mbps service was accessible to 99.3 percent of homes in Norway last year. The government's goal is full 1 Gbps coverage by 2030.

Italian rural broadband specialist Eolo has launched a new prepay fixed wireless access (FWA) plan at download speeds of up to 1 Gbps that gives customers in digital divide areas the security of an always connected home for video surveillance and home automation devices as well as internet access when required. The rate, called Eolo QuandoVuoiTu, is being promoted to new users with a reduced installation fee of EUR 25 for the antenna and Wi-Fi router instead of EUR 100.

Vodafone adds security service to home broadband plans for GBP 2 per month

Vodafone UK is expanding its premium security features to all its home broadband customers. Previously reserved for Vodafone Pro customers, the services Secure Net Home to protect devices connected to the network and Who's Home for alerts on who is on the network are now being extended to all standard broadband customers.
