Adobe halts Flash mobile browser development
Adobe Systems has confirmed it's ceasing development of its Flash player for mobile browsers. Danny Winokur, Adobe's head of interactive development, said in a blog posting that "future work with Flash on mobile devices will be focused on enabling Flash developers to package native apps with Adobe AIR for all the major app stores. We will no longer adapt Flash Player for mobile devices to new browser, OS version or device configurations" following the upcoming release of Flash Player 11.1 for Android and BlackBerry. Adobe said some licensees may opt to continue working on and releasing their own implementations, and it will continue to support previous Android and PlayBook configurations of the software. The announcement comes alongside a major restructuring of Adobe's business, which will include a greater focus on HTML5 development and the PC experience for Flash. Winokur said "HTML5 [is] the best solution for creating and deploying content in the browser across mobile platforms", now that it is universally supported across mobiles. Adobe also announced plans to cut 750 jobs in North America and refocus its business on the main activities of Digital Marketing and Digital Media.
