Alcatel provides Airdata with wireless broadband solution
Alcatel announced that it has provided Airdata, a German fixed operator, with a turnkey solution for the wireless broadband coverage of "hot zones" in the Stuttgart metropolitan area. Alcatel has planned and built the network as the system vendor and is also responsible for its technical operation. This solution will allow users with a laptop or a PDA equipped with an Airdata PortableDSL modem to surf the Internet or access their corporate networks, broadband and wireless, within given "hot zones" in the inner city of Stuttgart as well as around the airport. The technology involved is a broadband wireless access solution based on TD-CDMA (TDD). Users have to get authenticated via SIM cards and passwords. Then, they can automatically enjoy the benefits of data transfer rates of downloads at up to 768 kbps and uploads at up to 128 kbps. This solution operates in the 2.6 GHz frequency band granted to Airdata in 30 regions in Germany. Alcatel's TDD solution allows fixed operators to expand their broadband services to their subscribers outside their home or office. It also perfectly complements mobile operators' GSM/GPRS and UMTS service offerings, as it is particularly well adapted to deploy cost-effective coverage of "hot zones" such as dense business areas, and supports Alcatel's extensive portfolio of 3G/UMTS and WLAN networks and services. "Alcatel's solution for Airdata illustrates Alcatel's commitment to make powerful broadband solutions available to the end-users", declared Marc Rouanne, Chief Operating Officer of the Alcatel mobile communications activities. "Alcatel strongly believes in the universality of broadband access for mobile and for fixed usage, whether via cable or wireless." Rouanne added. "We've profited from Alcatel's profound knowledge of wireless and communications technologies throughout this project.", declared Wolfgang Keuntje, Airdata. "After a rigorous pilot phase, we now know that our infrastructure will live up to the high demands of our customers. That's the central precondition for the success of our product," he concluded.
