Alcatel announced that ONI, Portugal's leading alternate fixed operator, has chosen the Alcatel Virtual Private LAN Service (VPLS) solution in order to offer advanced broadband services to its customers. The Alcatel solution will help ONI manage the increased bandwidth and service requirements associated with the launch of its advanced, service-aware broadband aggregation network for power-line access.
This network will allow the reliable and predictable delivery of services such as Voice over IP (VoIP), high-speed Internet and VPN (Virtual Private Networking) services with customized service level agreements (SLAs) to locations across Portugal.
According to Xavier Martin, ONI Telecom CTO, "ONI is able to take advantage of the power-line network infrastructure to offer broadband access to any user in Portugal with access to a power outlet. We can take that connectivity even farther based on the Alcatel VPLS solution, offering those same customers access to a much broader set of services in a scalable, reliable and affordable manner."

The Alcatel solution makes it possible to offer quality voice and data services over IP with the same levels of reliability, security and data integrity as delivered on traditional technologies. Comprised of the 7450 Ethernet Service Switch and managed by the 5620 Service Aware Manager (SAM), Alcatel's solution also offers ONI advanced management tools that allow a faster and simplified subscriber service, provisioning and pro-actively safeguarding the services pre-defined by the SLAs.
Furthermore, the solution includes the Integrated Service Adapter Ethernet Switching (ISA-ES) boards over the optical transmission central nodes (1660SM) and access nodes (1642 Edge Multiplexer).
Alcatel's VPLS solution enables service providers to respond to enterprises with profitable, billable services that are not subject to the
commoditization pressures they face with best effort offerings. With Alcatel's VPLS solution, ONI can offer its enterprise customers the cost benefits of Ethernet with the predictable quality of service (QoS) characteristics of multi-protocol label switching (MPLS).
