Alcatel strikes deal with Altran for Orvault site

Alcatel-Lucent is beginning negotiations with its works council in France on 15 January at which the company will outline the detailed measures of its Shift restructuring plan which calls for 10,000 job cuts around the world. CEO Michel Combes told Le Monde ahead of the meeting that Alcatel no longer plans to cut 900 jobs in France, but fewer than 700. The company has reached an agreement with engineering consultancy Altran for its site in Orvault, France. Altran will set up a telecom specialist union at the site and hire 170 of Alcatel’s 250 R&D specialists, notably those working on 4G technologies.

Alcatel is also in talks with other businesses in the region, in telecom and related industries. Asked about industry minister Arnaud Montebourg’s call for economic patriotism to support Alcatel, Combes cited a small cells agreement with Orange, and a recent fibre optic contract win with SFR. He added that discussions with SFR were continuing and that new contracts could be announced soon with this operator.

Alcatel is also in negotiations with Bouygues Telecom, Numericable and Outremer Telecom about possible contracts for fixed and mobile equipment. The CEO said that no partnership had been struck with Iliad yet, but he did not rule out the chance of reaching one in the future.
