Alpha Telecom signs contract for Mali's third mobile licence
Planor group company Alpha Telecom and its partner Monaco Telecom International signed the contract for Mali's third mobile phone licence on 12 February, Agence Ecofin reports. Alpha aims to build "an international class network accessible to all in Mali". Monaco Telecom's Apollinaire Campaore said the network would be operational as soon as possible. Malian new technologies minister Brehima Tolo said deployment obligations were waived for areas currently inaccessible because of the war. The government will be paid the XOF 55 billion licence in tranches. The first payment of XOF 33 billion is due after a decree approving the licence terms is signed, the minister said. The remainder would be paid three months after the licence is handed over. The entry of Alpha is expected to boost mobile penetration and to reduce prices.

Mali to license fourth mobile operator

The government of Mali is preparing to launch a tender for the country's fourth mobile licence. The government aims to award the new licence by the end of March. Mali could launch a fourth mobile licence tender at the end of the year, when Alpha Telecom's exclusivity arrangement runs out, writes Agence Ecofin. Planor sued by intermediary over Alpha Telecom licence deal

Planor International, the parent company of the winner of Mali's third mobile licence with Alpha Telecom, has been sued in the commercial court of Bamako by Societe Ouest-Africaine de Developpement (Soda) for breach of contract, according to Malian press reports. According to Soda, Planor sought its services as an intermediary with the government to help it secure its licence. Under the terms of an agreement signed in April 2012, Soda should have been paid 10 percent of the licence price, or XOF 5 billion.

Mali's Alpha makes remaining mobile licence payment

Mali's Alpha Telecom has paid the state the XOF 7.16 billion still outstanding for the country's third mobile licence, Agence Ecofin reports. The payment was made on 13 November, the deadline set by the government, and faced being prevented from entering the market had it failed to do so. The total licence fee was XOF 55 billion. Alpha is expected to launch commercial services next year.

Malitel FY revenue up 14.1 percent to MAD 2.42 bln

Mobile operator Malitel, a subsidiary of Maroc Telecom, posted a 14.1 percent increase in its revenues for the year ended 31 December 2012 to MAD 2.42 million, despite the political turmoil in the country. The firm attributed the revenue growth to an upturn in mobile subscribers of 38 percent to 6.0 million from 4.4 million in 20111. Fourth-quarter revenues in Mali grew by 8.7 percent year on year.

Monaco Telecom wins contract from new Malian operator

Monaco Telecom is entering Mali as a telecom services supplier to the country's third operator, through its Alpha Telecom Mali subsidiary, reports Gabonews, citing a cabinet press release. Parent company Cable & Wireless head of communications Steve Smith confirmed to Telecompaper that Monaco Telecom won a contract from a consortium led by Planor.
