Alphabet to relaunch Google News in Spain after EU copyright law adopted

Alphabet intends to relaunch its Google News service in Spain at the start of 2022 around 7 years after shutting it down following the government's adoption of the European Union copyright directive. "Starting early next year, Google News will provide links to useful and relevant news stories from a wide range of sources," confirmed Google Spain Country Manager Fuencisla Clemares in a blog post.

The Google News Spain service closed in December 2014 due to government legislation requiring news aggregators such as Google News, Reddit and Digg to pay “fair compensation” to republish headlines or snippets of news. However, the government’s adoption of the EU copyright directive means third-party online news platforms can now negotiate directly with individual publishers.

Alphabet said it will be working with publishers to reach agreements which cover their rights under the new law over the coming months. It also plans to launch its Google News Showcase in Spain, described as a licensing program that pays publishers to curate content for story panels across Google News and Discover.

The company has already reach deals to remunerate publishers for the re-use of their content in France and Germany in response to adoption of the EU Copyright Law. It also paid out more than USD 130 million to Spain’s top five news publisher partners in its ad network from 2018 to 2020.
