Amazon CFO to retire after 12 years
Amazon.com announced that its CFO Thomas Szkutak plans to retire from the company in June 2015, after 12 years managing the online retailer's finances. Brian Olsavsky, VP of Finance for the company's global consumer business, will succeed Szkutak as chief financial officer. Olsavsky, age 51, joined Amazon in April 2002 as VP of Finance and has held numerous financial leadership roles across Amazon with global responsibility.

Amazon.com to acquire Twitch Interactive

Amazon.com has reached an agreement to acquire Twitch Interactive, a live video platform for gamers. In July, more than 55 million unique visitors viewed more than 15 billion minutes of content on Twitch, produced by more than 1 million broadcasters. Twitch launched in June 2011 to focus exclusively on live video for gamers. Under the terms of the agreement, which has been approved by Twitch's shareholders, Amazon will acquire all of the outstanding shares of Twitch for approximately USD 970 million in cash

Amazon unveils mobile payments card reader

Amazon has introduced Amazon Local Register, a secure card reader and mobile app that provides businesses with the ability to accept credit and debit cards from a smartphone or tablet. Amazon Local Register customers will have access to the Amazon.com dedicated customer support team as well as in-app tracking tools. Customers who sign up for Amazon Local Register before 31 October will also receive a low promotional rate of 1.75 percent per card swipe on all major credit and debit cards until 1 January 2016

Amazon sales up 23%, net loss widens in Q2

Amazon.com's net loss widened to USD 126 million or USD 0.27 per share in the second quarter from USD 7 million or USD 0.02 per share in the year-earlier period. The online retailer's sales rose 23 percent year-on-year to USD 19.34 billion, while the operating result moved to a loss of USD 15 million from a profit of USD 79 million a year ago. Amazon has announced that Amazon Appstore selection has nearly tripled over the past year, and since the launch of Fire phone, the rate of app submissions to the Amazon Appstore has more than doubled. App submissions are at record levels in the five week period since launch.
