Amazon Prime Video reaches distribution deal with Altice in France and other countries

Amazon has signed a distribution agreement with Altice in a deal that will make Amazon Prime Video content available directly via the set-top boxes of SFR in France. Altice’s subsidiaries in Portugal, Israel and the Dominican Republic will also introduce the service in the near future.

The launch in France will happen soon after the planned update of SFR Box 8, which will start supporting Amazon Alexa from October. The new STB, which became available on 20 August, LaBox SFR Fibre and SFR Box Plus will be the first to integrate Amazon Prime Video, said the company, enabling viewers to benefit from a large selection of programmes in Ultra High Definition (UHD) quality. Prime Video content will also become available soon to SFR mobile customers.

According to Variety, Amazon is currently negotiating similar deals with other key French operators.

Iliad's subsidiary Free reached an agreement with Amazon to offer new and existing Freebox Delta customers the chance to subscribe to Amazon Prime at no extra charge. Worth EUR 5.99/month, the service offers free and fast delivery for many products sold on the Amazon platform, as well as access to Prime Video, Prime Music, Twitch Prime, and Prime Reading.

Amazon Channels become available in France for Prime members

Amazon Prime members in France now have the option to access a new range of paid-for channels on the streaming video platform. Initially planned for the end of May, the launch follows the news that Amazon Studios is expected to announce in the coming weeks several new French language original productions. Altice France uses Sagemcom Video Soundbox for SFR Box 8

Altice France has relied on the expertise of equipment maker Sagemcom for its new premium set-top box, launched on 20 August. Co-developed with Altice Labs, SFR Box 8 uses components from Sagemcom's Video Soundbox product range, which was created to meet growing demand for immersive features such as voice commands and Dolby Atmos compatibility, the supplier said.

French operator Free stops distributing TV channels in dispute with Altice

Altice France has failed to reach an agreement with Free on the distribution fees for its TV channels BFM TV, RMC Decouverte and RMC Story, ahead of the deadline of 27 August set by a court decision earlier this month. Free had been accused by Altice France of illegally distributing the three channels and was ordered to remove them from its IPTV platform. The operator has now complied with the ruling, although Freebox TV customers can still access them on a free-to-air basis via the DTT tuner of set-top-box

SFR to launch premium STB on 20 August

French operator SFR has unveiled a new 4K-compatible set-top box developed by sister company Altice Labs, without revealing the cost to customers. It will become available on 20 August with all FTTH/DSL plans, and on 08 October for subscribers on the operator's hybrid fibre-coaxial network. Named SFR Box 8, the new addition will be marketed as an optional upgrade to new sign-ups, who will still be able to choose the existing 4K-compatible SFR Box 7 model as the standard offer.
