Angola awards 5G licences to Unitel, Movicel and Africell

The Angolan Institute of Communications (Inacom) has awarded 5G licences to Africell, Movicel and Unitel, reports Mercado. The operators will use spectrum in the 3.3-3.7 GHz frequency band.

The licensing procedure consists of several phases, starting with two-year licences for testing the technology, during which operators are exempt from payment of fees for spectrum use. In the subsequent stage, Unitel, Movicell and Africell will be attributed the definite licences, for which they will pay for the use of the designated spectrum.

Angola's Unitel prevents over 30,000 cyber attacks in 2021

Angolan operator Unitel identified and prevented 30,418 cyber attacks in 2021, an average of 2,535 attempted attacks per month, according to CEO Amilcar Safeca, reports Lusa. Safeca said that Unitel's management has developed an IT security programme consisting of 15 initiatives, to boost security and prevent attacks, in line with the International Information Security Management Standard.

Africell to expand network in Angola in 2022

The president and CEO of Africell Angola, Goncalo Faria, said that after launching services in Luanda, the mobile operator is now working on expanding the network in the provinces of Benguela and Huila, and is prospecting in Cabinda, reports Mercado. He added that by July, the service will be up and running in Benguela province, and by the end of the year in the city of Lubango. Unitel and Movicel introduce new tariffs after Africell launch

Angolan mobile operators Unitel and Movicel launched new tariffs in the week that the country's fourth mobile operator, Africell, started operations, reports Novo Jornal. Unitel launched the Bazza tariff plan, which allows users to talk 60 minutes a day on-net free the first three months. The tariff also includes a Sim card with 1 GB valid for 10 days, plus an additional AOA 100 to talk with customers of other operators.

Africell has launched commercial mobile services in Angola, bringing fresh competition to the sector there. To promote its launch, Africell Angola will offer new customers free Africell-to-Africell calls. Customers can benefit from Africell's 4G-native network with data bundles at up to half the price of competing offers, with 1 GB costing AOA 750 (USD 1.69).

Movicel loses over 1 million customers during Covid-19 pandemic - report

Movicel lost 1.2 million mobile network subscribers between the end of 2019 and the third quarter of 2021, according to Expansao's calculations, based on data from Angola's National Communications Institute (Inacom). This represents a 45 percent drop from the nearly 2.7 million customers it held three years ago. Unitel has absorbed almost all the clients, consolidating its position as market leader over the years, the newspaper said.
