Apple delays launch of HomePod speaker to early 2018

Apple has delayed the launch of its new HomePod smart speaker until early 2018. When first announced in June, the speaker was expected to launch in December 2017, in time for holiday sales. 

The company did not give a reason for the delayed launch, but comfirmed to several media outlets that no sales are planned before year-end. Apple said it aims to start shipping the device in the US, UK and Australia in early 2018.

Apple to bring HomePod to Canada, France, Germany from 18 June

Apple announced that its HomePod speaker will be available in Canada, France and Germany from 18 June. The company is also rolling out a software update to support pairing HomePods and creating a multi-room audio system. The latter is based on the iOS 11.4 update, which uses AirPlay 2 to play music in any room from any room, using an iOS device, HomePod, Apple TV or by asking Siri.

LG unveils AI-based smart speaker

LG Electronics has introduced a smart speaker, dubbed 'the ThinQ Hub'. The smart speaker is based on the Clova AI virtual assistant or CLOud Virtual Assistant, developed by Naver, Yonhap press agency reports. Home appliances, including TVs, refrigerators and washers, can be activated through ThinQ Hub, the company said. Clova combines speech recognition and natural language understanding to respond to users' questions and to call up information, such as the weather and news.

Apple previews HomePod speaker for year-end launch

Apple has joined the market for voice-activated home speakers, previewing at its annual developers conference a 7-inch device powered by its virtual assistant software Siri. The HomePod is planned to launch in December for USD 349 in the US, UK, Canada and Australia. Apple also presented at WWDC new iPad Pro models and the latest version of iOS, which will roll out in the autumn.
