Apple, Samsung losing share in declining tablet market - IDC

Worldwide shipments of tablets fell for the third consecutive quarter in the April-June period, posting sales of 44.7 million, down 7.0 percent year-on-year and 3.9 percent compared to Q1, according to the latest data released by IDC. Beyond the falling sales, the figures revealed that the top two vendors, Apple and Samsung, are losing overall market share to vendors such as LG, Huawei and Lenovo, who are better addressing available pockets of growth in the market, said IDC. The combined share of Apple and Samsung dropped to 41 percent in the second quarter from 45 percent in Q1.

Apple retained its lead of the tablet market, shipping 10.9 million iPads in the second quarter, for a market share of 24.5 percent, but iPad sales were down 17.7 percent from the year-earlier quarter, while Apple’s overall share fell 3.2 percent. Samsung (17.0 percent share) maintained its second place in the market with 7.6 million tablets sold despite a 12.0 percent decline in shipments compared to the same period last year. Lenovo (5.7 percent share), Huawei (3.7 percent) and LG (3.6 percent) rounded out the top 5 positions, the latter two vendors growing their market share by 103.6 percent and 246.4 percent respectively.
