Workers at the Austin, Texas, factory where the previous Mac Pro model was made will not really be affected by the move. Demand for the older model, put out in 2013, has over the years gone down and the workforce has shifted to refurbishing already-made computers. The plant, run by contract manufacturer Flex, also makes products for HP and other companies, sources said.
Flex and Quanta declined to comment on the news. An Apple spokesperson said the new Mac Pro is designed and engineered in the US and includes US-made components. Apple said it supports manufacturing in 30 US states and spent USD 60 billion last year with more than 9,000 US suppliers. “Final assembly is only one part of the manufacturing process,” the spokesman said, adding that the company’s investments support 2 million American jobs.
The Mac Pro is mainly used by professionals working in industries such as film and videogames.
