Apple announced plans to make it easier for customers to repair their iPhones and Mac computers. Starting in the US, the company will make available authorised replacement parts and tools for the most common repairs, such as iPhone displays, batteries and cameras.
The Self Service Repair offering will be available to start for the iPhone 12 and 13 smartphone series and Mac computers featuring M1 chips. Apple plans to roll out the offering to other countries and additional repair options in 2022.
Customers will join the more than 5,000 Apple Authorized Service Providers and 2,800 Independent Repair Providers who have access to these parts, tools, and manuals from Apple. Customers can buy the spare parts from Apple directly online, choosing from more than 200 individual parts and tools. After completing the repair, they can send in the old parts to receive a credit on their purchase.
Apple said Self Service Repair is intended "for individual technicians with the knowledge and experience to repair electronic devices. For the vast majority of customers, visiting a professional repair provider with certified technicians who use genuine Apple parts is the safest and most reliable way to get a repair".
