Apple said the upcoming iOS 10 operating system will allow iPhone users to sign up as organ, eye and tissue donors within the device's Health app. Following a simple sign up process users will be automatically enrolled in the National Donate Life Registry managed by Donate Life America, a not-for-profit campaigning group.
The new feature will enable people to "carry their decision with them wherever they go," Apple said in a statement, adding that over 120,000 Americans are currently waiting for a lifesaving transplant and that each organ donor can save as many as eight lives.
iOS 10 will be available as a public beta programme later in July and the final version is scheduled for release in the autumn,.
