Apple's Ive become new chief design officer

Apple senior VP of Design Jony Ive has been named the company’s chief design officer, a newly created position, Ive and CEO Tim Cook told The Telegraph in an interview with Stephen Fry.

The executives also said that from 1 July, Richard Howarth will become the new head of Industrial Design and Alan Dye the head of User Interface. Howarth, an Apple veteran, will focus on hardware. Dye, a key player in IOS 7’s major redesign, will be in charge of the departments that covers design for both desktop and mobile devices. Howarth and Dye will take over many administrative duties from Ive, freeing him up to design and travel.

Cook sent an email to employees, informing them of the changes, 9to5Mac reported, citing a copy of the mail. Cook said that the new role is a reflection of the growing scope of work Ive is doing, from designing hardware to software UI, Apple retail stores, the company’s new campus in Cupertino, or product packaging.
