AST SpaceMobile, Vodafone to offer space-based mobile services in Africa from 2023

AST & Science (AST SpaceMobile) has announced a partnership with Vodafone Group to launch the first phase of its space-based commercial mobile communications service in 2023.

AST SpaceMobile has secured up to USD 462 million in additional funding (gross) for the first phase of the network, which will cover the 49 largest countries in the equatorial region from 2023. This funding has been provided by existing investors including Vodafone, American Tower and Rakuten, as well as new investors. The space-based mobile network will connect directly to 4G/5G smartphones without the need for specialised hardware. This will allow Vodafone to provide universal mobile coverage to rural areas across Africa, and to provide instant communications in the event of a humanitarian or natural disaster.

The first phase of the AST SpaceMobile launch plan involves the use of 20 satellites to provide low-latency mobile connectivity that can be accessed by around 1.6 billion people. The initial service will target a geographic area North and South of the equator, with Vodafone integrating the technology with services provided by the Vodafone, Vodacom and Safaricom brands. Subject to regulatory approval, the service will be provided in countries including Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, Ghana and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). AST SpaceMobile will also apply for approval to launch the service in India.
