Asus releases high-end ROG Phone 5 for gamers

Asus has unveiled its new ROG Phone 5, a trio of high-end smartphones aimed at gaming enthusiasts. The phone comes with a number of advanced features, such as the first use of 18 GB RAM, a 144 Hz HDR 10+ display and 6,000 mAh battery with 65W fast charging. The phones are expected to go on sale in the coming month.

The smartphone is powered by the flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 chipset, with Snapdragon Elite Gaming features and support for 5G and Wi-Fi 6E. Asus brings an upgraded GameCool 5 cooling system and performance manager to optimise the gaming experience, along with further improvements to its AirTrigger 5 control system and GameFX audio system.

The 6.78-inch Amoled display from Samsung promises an industry-leading 300 Hz touch sampling rate and ultra-low 24.3 ms touch latency. The triple back camera comes with a Sony IMX686 64-megapixel sensor with quad Bayer technology along with a 5 megapixel macro lens and 13-megapixel ultra wide-angle. On the front is a 24-megapixel selfie camera.

The premium ROG Phone 5 Pro and ROG Phone 5 Ultimate editions come with a rear matrix display that shows customizable animations in response to a variety of system and in-game events. The Pro model features a colour ROG Vision display, while the Ultimate model comes with a monochrome version. In addition to the standard 10 different motion controls on the phone, the Pro and Ultimate models also come with hidden rear touch sensors on the back cover, which provide L2/R2 trigger functions, just like a game console controller.

The other main differences in the three models are the memory capacity. The standard model comes with 8 GB RAM and 128 GB storage, the Premium edition with 16GB+256GB and the Ultimate model with 18GB+512GB.
