AT&T completes first 5G field test with sub-6 GHz spectrum

AT&T said it's making progress with plans to launch 5G over sub-6 GHz spectrum in the US. The company completed its first data transfer over the spectrum in the field this week.

The connection was made in Plano, Texas using a Qualcomm Technologies smartphone form factor test device powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 5G modem, RF transceiver and RF Front-End. AT&T said the move to field tests "marks significant progress toward our plans to offer 5G to customers across the country". It's also on track to offer its first smartphone capable of accessing 5G over low-band spectrum as early as this year.

AT&T's initial 5G service was launched over mmWave spectrum in the US and is available in parts of 20 cities already, focusing on high demand areas.
