AT&T expands 5G, LTE-LAA to new localities

AT&T said it's launching mobile 5G in three more cities, Charlotte, Raleigh, North Carolina, and Oklahoma City, bringing the total number of localities covered by the technology to 6. The company said it plans to bring mobile 5G to customers in a dozen cities in 2018. Also, LTE-LAA launched for AT&T in parts of 8 new markets, Austin, Dallas, Houston, Little Rock, San Antonio, San Jose, Tampa, and Tuscaloosa, Alabama, bringing us to a total of 15 markets.

The company said it's deliberately launching with a mix of big and mid-sized cities. Its foundational 5G Evolution technology is now live in more than 140 markets, reaching at least 400 markets this year.

5G Evolution markets are locations where the company deployed the latest technologies that enable peak theoretical wireless speeds of at least 400 Mbps on capable devices.

The company previously launched LTE-LAA in parts of Boston, Chicago, Indianapolis, Los Angeles, McAllen, San Francisco, and Sacramento. With LTE-LAA, the network has peak theoretical wireless speeds reaching up to 1 Gbps on capable devices.

AT&T made what it calls the world's first wireless 5G data transfer over millimetre wave using standards-based, production equipment with a mobile form factor device over the 8-9 September weekend, in Waco, Texas. FCC prepares for fall spectrum auction with more flexible rules for future 5G frequencies

To make the use of bands more flexible, the agency has adopted new rules for certain millimeter wave spectrum bands. These include adopting an operability requirement for the entire 24 GHz band, a sharing framework to allow the use of part of the 24 GHz band for terrestrial mobile operations and Fixed Satellite Service (FSS) earth stations, a band plan for the lower 37 GHz band, and spectrum aggregation rules applicable to certain bands.

AT&T has continued with its 5G tests in cooperation with partners Ericsson and Intel with a demonstration of 5G-enabled virtual reality at its Shape event in California. Verizon names LA as second city for 5G launch

Verizon announced a second city for its planned 5G launch later this year. In addition to the earlier announced Sacramento, 5G will also come to Los Angeles in Q4, CEO Lowell McAdam said in an interview on CNBC. In total Verizon plans to launch 5G in an initial 3-5 markets.

Verizon launches first live LTE network in 3.5 GHz shared spectrum

Verizon has launched the first live LTE network on the shared 3.5 GHz band in the US. Sprint adds 3 more cities to 5G launch plan

Sprint has announced three more cities where it plans to launch 5G services in the first half of 2019: New York City, Phoenix and its home town Kansas City.
