AT&T may become fourth mobile operator in Czech Republic - report

Czech portal iDnes.cz discussed the possibility of AT&T entering the market as the country's fourth mobile operator through the 5G spectrum auction, based on discussions in Davos between Prime Minister Andrej Babis and the CEO of AT&T Communication, John Donovan. The auction for frequencies in the bands 700 MHz and 3.5 GHz is planned for the second half of the year. The regulator CTU intends to reserve a part of the frequencies for a new entrant.

The news about the US operator AT&T is surprising, comments iDnes.cz. This is generally the largest telecommunications company in the world. In the case of mobile networks, it is the number two in the US and the number one on the American continents. Elsewhere in the world, though, it does not provide mobile services in its own network.

The company has been operating in the Czech Republic since the end of the 1990s and currently has a service support centre and development offices, specifically in Brno at Campus Science Park. This may not be related to any activity on the Czech mobile market. The largest US operator Verizon also has branches in Prague and Ostrava.
