AT&T to be exclusive carrier of Amazon smartphone - report

AT&T will be the exclusive carrier for the new Amazon smartphone, expected to be introduced on 18 June, according to people familiar with the plans, reported The Wall Street Journal. The agreement extends Amazon's existing partnership with AT&T, which already provides wireless service to Amazon's Kindle tablets and e-readers.

Amazon's new phone will come equipped with a screen capable of displaying seemingly three-dimensional images without requiring consumers to use special glasses, according to a Wall Street Journal article citing people briefed on the plans. The device will utilise retina-tracking technology embedded in four front-facing cameras, or sensors, to make select images appear to be 3D, similar to a hologram, according to the story.

Amazon is expected to unveil its new smartphone device at an event in Seattle and has already demonstrated versions of the handset to developers in San Francisco and Seattle. The company hopes to being shipping the device by the end of September.
