AT&T appoints McElfresh as Communications CEO, promotes Stankey to COO

AT&T announced the appointment of Jeff McElfresh as the new CEO of AT&T Communications, its largest division, grouping all its telecom activities. He will report to John Stankey, the CEO of WarnerMedia who has just been named to the new position of president and chief operating officer of AT&T.

Both new positions take effect 01 October. Stankey will continue as CEO of WarnerMedia as well as COO and report to AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson. In addition to McElfresh, Brian Lesser, CEO of Xandr, will report to Stankey. Stankey's role will be to bring together the telecom, media and advertising businesses at AT&T. 

McElfresh replaces John Donovan, who announced last month plans to retire in October. The 48-year-old has nearly 25 years of experience with AT&T in a variety of strategic, operational and technology leadership roles. He was most recently president of AT&T Communications’ Technology and Operations group where he was responsible for the company’s network, technology, cybersecurity, data and labs operations. Prior to that, he served as CEO of AT&T’s Vrio and its DirecTV Latin America and Sky Brasil businesses; and President of AT&T Mexico and a member of the board of directors and executive committee of Telmex and America Móvil, overseeing AT&T’s since-divested minority interest in the two companies.

AT&T announced the appointment of Jason Kilar as CEO of WarnerMedia from 01 May. He was previously the CEO of streaming service Hulu and before that a SVP at Amazon. He will report to AT&T COO John Stankey.

AT&T announces new financial growth targets to calm shareholder concerns

AT&T has announced new financial targets for the coming three years, following pressure from shareholders such as Elliott Management to rethink its strategy. The aim is to grow revenues 1-2 percent per year, improve margins through cost savings and divest more assets in order to boost free cash flow and shareholder returns while reducing debt. While two new directors will be appointed in the next two years, AT&T maintained its commitment to Randall Stephenson as CEO, who will stay on through 2020 at least.

WarnerMedia takes full control of HBO's LatAm services

WarnerMedia has signed an agreement to buy Ole Communications' minority stake in HBO Ole Partners, the joint venture between WarnerMedia and Ole Communications. When the transaction closes, WarnerMedia will own 100 percent of all HBO, MAX, Cinemax and HBO Go services in Spanish-speaking Latin America and the Caribbean, said the company, adding that the ownership structure of HBO Brasil Partners, another joint venture between the companies that operates HBO in Brazil, remains unaffected.

AT&T COO says DirecTV not for sale

AT&T's chief operating officer defended the company's strategy in the media business and said it doesn't plan to sell its pay-TV operator DirecTV. In an interview, John Stankey told the Wall Street Journal that DirecTV is important to the company's future plans in the streaming market.

AT&T says TV subscriber losses set to continue as it focuses on profitability

AT&T said it expects to continue to lose pay-TV customers in the rest of 2019, as more customers come off two-year contracts and it undergoes distribution disputes with key broadcasters. AT&T raises cash flow target after drop in Q2 earnings

AT&T has raised its target for free cash flow this year, supported by better working capital management, after reporting a record amount of USD 8.8 billion in the second quarter.
