Australian govt bans Huawei from NBN tenders
The Australian government has rejected NBN bids from Chinese equipment vendor Huawei over security concerns. Officials reportedly told Huawei last year not to bother tendering for any contracts for the National Broadband Network (NBN) and also told the company that the government was aware of Chinese government cyber attacks, The Australian writes. "The National Broadband Network is the largest nation-building project in Australian history, and it will become the backbone of Australia's information infrastructure. As such, and as a strategic and significant government investment, we have a responsibility to do our utmost to protect its integrity and that of the information carried on it," a spokesperson for Attorney-General Nicola Roxon said. Meanwhile, Huawei's head of public affairs Jeremy Mitchell said in a TV interview with Sky News that the company was disappointed it would not land any NBN contracts, but that he understood that the supply of telecommunications technology is a sensitive issue for governments.
