Baidu surpasses Google in global smart speaker market in Q2
Chinese internet giant Baidu replaced Google as the world’s second biggest smart speaker vendor in the second quarter of 2019, according to the latest report from Canalys. Baidu shipped a total of 4.5 million units in the April to June period, just ahead of Google’s 4.3 million and behind the 6.6 million Echo speakers shipped by market leader Amazon. China’s Alibaba and Xiaomi rounded out the top 5 with shipments of 4.1 million and 2.8 million respectively.

Baidu’s growth was driven by aggressive promotion and go-to-market campaigns in China, its sole market, where quarterly smart speaker shipments doubled to 12.6 million, while US shipments declined 2.4 percent to 6.1 million units. Global shipments grew by 55.4 percent to 26.1 million units, compared to 16.8 million in Q2 2018, added the report.
